Atalon is Napa Valley north, east, south and west, a fitting definition for a winery whose logo is a compass. Rather than focus on a single, small plot of land, Atalon explores Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc from the four corners of California’s most famous appellation. Each year the winery harvests fruit from estate and grower vineyards located on well-placed benches and mountaintops up and down the Napa Valley. The high elevation sites include properties on Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain and Atlas Peak. The benchland sites are primarily in Rutherford and Oakville.Winemaker Brian Kosi knows Napa Valley well. A graduate of UC Davis, he brings more than a decade of winemaking experience to Atalon. During his tenure at the winery, he has fine-tuned vineyard sourcing and winemaking protocols. Brian’s exceptional palate and talent for blending has had a major impact on the winery’s wines.Atalon’s Cabernet Sauvignon is deep, luscious and eminently drinkable. For additional bouquet and textural complexity, the wine includes small amounts of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Pauline’s Cuvée is a Merlot-dominant blend named after Barbara Banke’s mother Pauline. It is subtle, silky and elegant. Atalon’s Sauvignon Blanc is rich, aromatic and harmonious. It is aged primarily in stainless steel tanks with 10% used oak barrels. A dash of Semillon and regular stirring of the lees adds creaminess to the mouthfeel.
