Description/ Tasting Notes

Aromas of black cherry and strawberry, with subtle notes of spice and toasty oak. The palate is rich and round, bright and juicy berry flavours leading to a long, textured finish.

Winery Info/ Brand

Monterey’s Salinas Valley is a hauntingly beautiful landscape located midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Carmel Road was founded in 1999 to produce compelling Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Panorama Vineyard and other estate sites along the eastern and western foothills of the Salinas Valley. The climate here is driven by the Blue Grand Canyon, a massive geological formation below Monterey Bay that is 60 miles long and more than 10,000 feet deep. Its cold waters create the fog and brisk winds that sweep the Salinas Valley each day, creating conditions that are ideal for Burgundian varieties. The 415-acre Panorama Vineyard, the primary fruit source for Carmel Road, is located on a bench in the Arroyo Seco AVA. It is the largest, single, high-density planting of Pinot Noir in America. The competition for water and nutrients within each block forces the vines to put more of their energy into ripening the fruit. This results in wines with heightened aromatics, incredible concentration and greater complexity.Carmel Road’s winemaker is Kris Kato who attended Oregon State University’s fermentation science program. Working at wineries both big and small along the Central Coast, Kris’ experience has prepared him for his role at Carmel Road where he focuses on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Region Info/ Origin

Inland from Monterey’s rugged coastline, yet still directly in the path of the ocean’s relentless influences, Carmel Road’s vineyards can be found nestled on the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains. No mountains hinder the flow of air from the Monterey Bay, allowing fog and chilly, moisture-laden winds to sweep over our vineyards daily, making this one of the coldest wine regions in California. The maritime climate combines with rocky, well-drained, alluvial gravel soils to produce Chardonnay with bright, vibrant fruit flavours.
