Description/ Tasting Notes
The 2014 Palmer builds on the promise that it showed in barrel. It is clearly a more understated and nuanced Palmer from winemaker Thomas Duroux this year, but a Margaux with exquisite delineation and precision, hints of blackberry, boysenberry and a touch of pencil box. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin. It feels supple and lithe in the mouth. This has a fresh, energetic feel, with lots of bramble-edged grip pushing the core of raspberry, plum and cherry coulis flavors. The finish is very pure, punctuated by lively floral and iron notes. Flaunts minerality in the end.Winery Info/ Brand
The Palmer Vineyards cover 55 hectares in the commune of Cantenac. Most of the plots are concentrated on a plateau of thin gravel from the Güntz period on the top of the rises of the Margaux appellation. The Palmer plateau is situated on these first gravel terraces along the edge of the estuary. As the saying goes in Bordeaux, the great terroirs overlook the river. The grape variety does not alone determine the character of the wine. Each variety, with its own characteristics, is merely the terroir's means of expression. The vintner's art consists in choosing the varieties best suited to the terroir and understanding the wine that come from it. Then comes the time for marrying them to yield a unique, inimitable Château Palmer.
Region Info/ Origin
The Margaux appellation encompasses the village of Margaux and the neighbouring villages of Arsac, Labarde, Soussans and Cantenac. Being the most southerly of the Médoc's appellations, it has the thinnest soil in the region with the highest proportion of gravel that allows the soil to drain very well. The wine from this area are very susceptible to weather effects during the growing season. Encountering all seasons with adequate irrigation, relatively good rainfall and good amount of sunlight, the crop yields a bountiful harvest year-on-year. The winery takes pride and value that captures the essence that reflects their unique brand.
